In the tree portraits, I tried to catch the unique character, the unbroken joy of life, the pulsing life power, the acutely female
always- coquettish lady, who is my Jewish aunt.
I don’t know her exact age, as she has not been celebrating her birthday for decades- this must be the only party at which she fails to appear voluntarily.

Her main occupation is traveling. Since she had to flee from Berlin to Paris she has been on the road constantly, apart from some brief phases of recreation.
Déd’s inner sanctuaries are the great museums of the world. It is there where she feels at home, as in her quarter; the “Marais”.
We are planning to drive to the Taiga with the Trans-Siberian train. It is one of the few routes she does not know yet. Circumstances have so far prevented me from putting my plan into action. She does not share my fear.
I hope that enough time remains to board that train.

When traveling she always carries scales in her luggage, in order to control her weight at all times. Letting herself go is not at all part of her character.
She remains the “Grand dame” no matter how small the village, how gray the surroundings…
As such I look up to her. Déd gives me the courage to grow old-
to not only blossom in youth.
